It elected as its speaker former top nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani, a conservative heavyweight who has been critical of President Ahmadinejad. In his first speech, Larijani made clear his intention to be a powerful speaker, warning that parliament could use its powers to make Iran revise its cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog. Iranian President Ahmadinejad has requested a meeting with the Pope, a diplomatic source told Reuters on Tuesday. A meeting between the political and spiritual leader would be a first. Italy's foreign ministry says Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi declined to hold bilateral talks with the Iranian leader. Drewery Dyke of Amnesty International will be our guest from the London studio, to discuss the release of their yearly report “The State of the World’s Human Rights,” especially as it pertains to Iran.
