News and Views
NaV will lead it’s broadcast with coverage of the confluence of events in Iraq and Iran, with reporting that a relative and key follower of radical Shia cleric Moqtada Sadr has been shot dead in the Iraqi city of Najaf. Riyad al-Nuri, the director of the cleric's office in Najaf, was killed by unidentified gunmen near his home as he returned from Friday prayers.
Coverage also includes reports that an influential Iranian cleric on Friday rejected President George W. Bush's accusations that Iran was arming and funding Shi'ite militias in Iraq to kill American soldiers. "Iran has never interfered in Iraq ... such claims are sheer lies made by Iraq's occupiers to continue Iraq's occupation," Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a senior advisor to Iran's top authority, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, told worshippers in a Friday prayers sermon.
NaV also covers reports that the US would enter trilateral talks with Iraq and Iran if the Iraqis wanted a round of security talks, the top U.S. diplomat in Iraq said. U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker was answering a question about why a more forceful response wasn't made to the upswing in violence and attacks on the Green Zone -- in which U.S. soldiers were killed -- after having "laid out a fairly persuasive case for Iranian involvement" in the attacks. We are efforting a reaction from the State Dept on this issue.
We will also look into reports that a series of recently released spy photos have uncovered the secret location where Iran has allegedly been developing long-range ballistic missiles capable of striking Europe, The Times(UK) reported on Friday. The satellite pictures pinpoint the facility where Iran launched its Kavoshgar 1 "research" rocket in February, according to the report. Iran has claimed that rocket was tested as part of its space program. The site is located about 230 kilometers southeast of Tehran.
Guest: Dr. Steven Kull, director of WorldPublicOpinion.org, will join us live on set. He will discuss his organization's findings in a poll released this week that Iranians favor direct talks with the US on shared issues, mutual access for journalists, and more trade. It also finds a diminished perception of US threat, and a general thawing of hostility.
